so... the method of workmany have been curious about my work method.
well to fully grasp that i must first explain my personal origins
1 i was a traditional painter and drawer?...that doesnt sound right...
batman catwoman by nebezial
batman huntress comission by nebezial
2 i was a traditional sculptor..alas photos of that stuff mostly got lost
so here is what i did in high school.... by nebezial
i practiced abour 17 yeears now to get this bunch of mostly self taught techniques to work
most of my stuff is a digital painting now, made or drawn in photoshop cs3. never switched higher as cs3 satisfied all my photoshoppin needs
i used to do quite a bit of modelling in 3d studio max, but it was too technical of a program so eventually i gave it up and completely switched to zbrush as it provided me with excellent set of organinc modelling and texturing tools
aand some of that

you wanna get good....then don't be a hater!okay so here is a tip
i have seen in my life many artists who proclaimed they want to develop their skills, and kept bashing on everyone and everything on the way....and for some reason those guys never got anywhere...
here is why..
there is a value to different approaches, different styles. realism, manga , cartooney disney, my little pony, furries....don't waste your time tryint to bash any of the stuff you don't personally like
you are missing out, bigtime!
see there is a reason why that stuff is popular. and by that i mean on the visual side. so instead of flaming , trolling and bashing, try understanding the inner workings of it.
here are some specific examples
realism- it is a wonderfully complex base , reflects one's skill in capturing reality, but in it there are differences between photo referenced, real life work and no reference. ALL HAVE THEIR VALUE AND IMPORTANCE! from photos you can learn alot, gain analytic skills, develop an attention to
on stylesimma keep this one simple....
style is just how the artist feels like treating his or her world at any given time!
it is influenced by the styles of other artists the artist admires
it is an amalgamation of influences mixed with personal sensibility....
it is perpetually changing and evolving
and it is not a trademarked property
see, i personally am a mix of influences from michael turner , adam hughes, marc silvestri, alex ross a few concept artist, and my design is greatly influenced by stan winston studio
my cartoonyer style is influenced greatly by disney and don bluth with a dash of manga and a healthy dose of j scott campbell who can probably tell you a similar story about the origins of his own style
its the nature of humanity people.
we stand on each others shoulders striving for greatness. so too will i influence quite a few artists who will adapt my own approaches into their workflow.
also.... i'm batman!
just to see who is still reading XD
about photoshop and hard work...damn it!WARINING- EITHER READ THIS COMPLETELY OR DON'T BOTHER, AS THAT IS ONE OF THE CHARACTER TRAITS THIS JOURNAL IS ABOUT!
okay, so after a swarm of questions many of which left me with my jaw on the floor... i realized something...
people are afraid of pushing a button to see what it does
okay, to backtrack first. i am self taught in photoshop, had no books had no tutorials, had a borrowed i think 7... dunno which was before cs2 when i started, i learned it by ....pressing a button and seeing what it does
i explored, i tried stuff out.
i had no teachers no schools no education on this stuff
i saw a button i pressed it.
that is how about 9 years ago when i first decided to try and apply digital coloring to early pages of ravine, i was dabbing paint on a page. i came to the point where i had to paint a waterfall. so , just for fun i tried putting scattering on the foam brush i made, a simple thing. and i was gonna see if smudge could be scattered. it had a weird side effect.
madnessapparently einstein defines madness as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
i call that practice....
so in short , if you wanna get good...
you gotta go a little bit crazy XD
(i cant believe that this has to be said but... this is a fun little joke from the same guy that brought you the sheer brilliance of dildo baggins, don't take me too seriously, god knows i don't XD)
tutorialsjust an announcement , this weekend im starting on some video + audio tuts... expect rude dickishness if the walk it off you pansy kind! XD. by that i mean , no tutorial will replace practice, it is meant to boost practice..so funtimes ahead!
video tutorialsso as many of you have noticed first one is up...in which i am dealing with a badass case of pollen allergy. for the curious ones, the sound i keep making that sounds like i ate a chiuaua whole is me trying to scratch the back of my throat... and ears..and eyes..and brain at the same time...
aaaanyways, im trying to figure out the themes for the next ones, to kinda give them structure, definitely on my list is reflectivity, details, and techniques and crap like that
then ill definitely have one on some digital inking tricks
prolly gonna do some zbrush ones too, but dont expect to learn that much from me without actually trying shit out on your own too.
and again to remind you all, these are nothing but techniques. if you want to learn how to actually draw... then..draw. if you fail...draw more, if you are the best ever..draw more.... im just here to show you some tips n tricks XD
i mean sure, you might end up pickin up on some stuff from me. but there is no substituti
and this is how you make a brush XDokay, so next week i will have actual video tuts of my own with audio showing some brush tips, but till then...
MY WIFE HAS HAD TUTORIALS ON THAT FOR OVER A YEAR AGOOOOOO!!!!
but googling how to make brushes in photoshop is soo tiresome ...
so, here is where you find her video containing that stuff
and here is a folder full of here tuts on brushes and other stuff
look through all of it if you want to learn some neat stuff.
then after actually trying some of it out, you will understand better how i do my stuff.
and then next week you will hear my charming lovely voice ranting about photoshoppin XD
should be fun, and seriously, my voice is ooh so sexy XDXDXDXDXD... with a slight hard r russianish accent XD
you know hov ve keep varm in croatia.... ve play...hm... diablo XD
my youtube channelfor those interested about my workflows i got m a bunch of videos there.
4 of them are tutorial videos , youwill have to excuse my allergy induced itch that resulted in me trying to scratch my troat.... which my microphone then decided to pick up and multiply to what sounds like me and my pet chiuaua trying to compete for the tutorial....i do not wons a pet chiuaua... i have a cat... he is a spoiled douche....
but that's a whole nother story
enjoy all you who haven't seen these yet as next month i will post a few shorter, more focused video tuts, some on photoshop techniques, some on general crap i figured out over time. till then
Its all a ScamContext
This is another long one, and I apologize but I need to speak my mind. This journal is in response to the "righteously indignant" users making a fuss about me "selling" fanart of copyrighted characters in my recent Adventure Time post. To the person who signed up today just to write a nasty comment on my new Society6 page. To the person who flagged my recent Adventure Time illustration on DA and then proceeded to send me an e-mail about doing it (probably the same person). To the people creating multiple accounts to try and dissuade users from spending their money how they see fit. And to a long list of people who follow everything I do post just to make sure that their negative voice and attitude are the first voices anyone ever sees on all of my work.
It's All A Scam
I'm in an unenviable position. Popular enough to be well known, not popular enough to be making oodles of cash off my stuff. Part of that is my own fault for not really promoting and selling myself,
Fandoms, Criticism Vlog, and Journals On Fandoms
Like most people, I'm a fan of a lot of things. However I don't often wade deep into fandoms themselves. For example, I like MLP:FiM, but I wouldn't call myself a hardcore Brony by any stretch of the imagination, as is evident by my continued botches of cutie mark colors (something no hardcore fan would EVER screw up).
Part of the reason I don't delve too far into fandoms is because fans can get very... emotional... about their given fandom. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can sometimes be a crutch. I like a variety of series, but I'm not gonna throw a tantrum because of an episode name, or an animation mistake, like some people do. I don't like how angry or defensive fandoms can get sometimes, and for the most part I think people need to just calm down and relax and not be so standoffish.
Fans are, for the most part, good people who are just enthusiastic about a show or series. Just try to keep that enthusiasm from dipping into the negative side of thing
Small UpdateI've been gone from the internet for almost 2 1/2 months now, and chances are I won't be coming back for quite a while longer. Nevertheless I just wanted to give a quick update and thank all my fans who have been so supportive of me these past few weeks/months.
I've been amazed at the number of genuine well wishes that I've received. I think the vast majority of my fans genuinely do enjoy my doodles and cartoons and that the well organized and extremely vocal "haters" of me and my work make up a very very VERY small percentage of my watchers. There have been some absolutely wonderful comments and messages being sent my way, and several of you have even sent me links to advice sites or inspirational posts. I truly do appreciate it. Thank you so very much.
I don't say Thank You enough, I think. Because of my fans I've been able to do some amazing things and I owe you guys a lot. Because of you'all, I've been able to visit another country and make friends from all over the world, somethin
A Very Important UpdateI haven't posted here on DA in a while, so this might be new to a lot of you, but if you've been following some of the stuff happening over on tumblr it won't be unexpected. For the past several weeks I've been getting steadily worse both mentally and physically. I've been depressed before, but I've never been as bad as I've been recently. I've lashed out at people, been getting angrier and grumpier, been finding it harder and harder to listen to people giving me positive feedback, and have even started rapidly losing a lot of weight.
My enjoyment for drawing has been dropping, and many of you have probably noticed that I've been taking more and more time off lately. For every few comics I post, I tend to spend another week recuperating. But within the past 2 weeks it's spiked so bad that I seriously have to consider what's more important: my health or drawing.
So for the time being I am shutting down. I'll still be working on brentalfloss and updating those here, and the most current
What do you think?I am thinking about making a little build a character comic/book type thingy. Its basically like my tip sheet but it will be in comic/book format. I have already split it into four categories, facial features, hair styles, clothes and body types. Basically its a little reference guide, where you can mix and match features to create your own characters, nothing too heavy or technical. I will also be posting the pages online for free since I don't like the idea of any of my tip sheet/references not being accessible.
What do you think?
I also want to get into graphic design/pictorial design so designing stuff like this is always good practice too! ^u^ and great for portfolios!
History Repeats ItselfLast week a Connecticut action group going by the name of SouthingtonSOS held a video game burning event where local citizens were encouraged to bring various forms of violent media to be burned in a dumpster, no doubt a reaction to the recent Connecticut shooting.
I wish I could say I am surprised about this, but sadly the whole media frenzy surrounding violence in video games and movies reminds me of something that already happened once and profoundly affected the media it was accusing: Comic books.
During the early days of comic books, things occasionally got a little risqué. EC Horror comics in particular delighted in rendering extremely gruesome images and disturbing themes in their comics, which were being sold to children unbeknownst to their parents (because naive parents at the time had no reason to suspect comics might contain "inappropriate" material). However all that changed in 1954.
German-American psychiatrist Fredric Wertham was upset about how disturbing some of those
Mini Movie ReviewsWith a 8 1/2 hour plane flight to and from England, and with downtime a result of stress, illness, and jet lag, I've been watching a lot of movies recently. I won't go into too much detail, but I just wanted to give my impressions on a couple movies I've seen recently.
John Carter of Mars
John Carter was a troubled movie in every sense of the word. It was given enormous studio backing, wasn't publicized well, and generally was a box office failure, resulting in a key Disney executive to resign in disgrace.
I won't say that it's the best movie I've ever seen, but it's far far above average and it frustrates me that people didn't see it or take to it. It offers so much wonderful imagery and possibilities for filmmaking it would be a shame to see this potentially new (in the sense that it's new to the big screen) franchise die right at the start.
There are a few weak actors, primarily the Mars princess, but they still nevertheless keep the story running at a nice pace. Plus there a
Unspoken rulesRecently I posted a Mass Effect 3 comic, and I've noticed that an unfortunate number of people ignored the description telling everyone that it was an old joke originally posted months ago. You don't have to like the joke, but if your major criticism is "this joke is no longer topical" then that isn't really my fault, is it?
So I think I need to re-explain a few things to make sure we're all on the same page.
About brentalfloss comics
I don't write it, I just draw it. Occasionally I'll have some artistic input, but outside that I generally follow the scripts tightly. Dan is in charge of writing, and he's been taking a lot of criticisms to heart lately. He's been experimenting with timing and panel layouts, and he's only going to get better as time goes on, but you've gotta give him time first. As a prime example: We haven't made a masterbation joke in almost a year, and that's entirely from the feedback we were getting. We are listening, it just takes time.
The brentalfloss comics are
Wii U Launch TitlesRemember when the Wii launched in 2006 with just a gamecube port of Zelda, a horribly broken Red Steel, and a handful of party games? That's not gonna happen with the Wii U. Along with the recent announcement of Bayonetta 2 being a Wii U exclusive title, Nintendo has just announced that there will be a staggering 23 games available on launch day. While many of the titles are ports of other games, there are still a huge selection of titles that I, a gamer who doesn't have access to a Ps3 or 360, would really enjoy being able to play finally.
Below is the current list of 23 titles, with the promise of 9 more games being released before December, and 20 more between December and April 2013.
Call of Duty®: Black Ops II
Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
EA SPORTS FIFA Soccer 13
TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2 Wii U Edition
New Super Mario Bros. U
NINJA GAIDEN 3: Razor's Edge

its a strange dubbed version of one of her strips..and...and.. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD THERE IS EVEN AN EMAILING SOUND... and music .. and timed text appearing with actual voiceover doing some pretty cool acting at the same time... and...
Inspector Wolf The old lady was dead. I could smell it before I even got into the house. The whole place reeked of adrenaline, sweat, fear, copper and steel. He’d dropped her right in her living room. Chopped and chopped until she stopped moving. But I could tell I was getting close. This had been done in a hurry, and the killer didn’t have the time to clean up after himself like he usually did.
Across the room, the phone rang. The shrill sound set my teeth to grinding, but I ignored it. Instead I followed the killer’s bloody footprints into the back bedroom. He’d climbed out the window. If I hurried, I could catch up to him and end this disgusting spree he was on.
Then the answering machine kicked in. “Hi, Gramma! It’s Red. Sorry I’m running late. I kind of lost track of time. But don’t worry. I packed the picnic and I’m heading out the door right now. Love you.”
She’d been expec
The TrundlerThe waste land behind the fire station is always silent. No birds sing there, and even the wild rabbits and feral cats avoid it. Weedy wildflowers nod their seasonal heads in the breeze. Lying fallow in the midst of housing developments, shopping malls, the new movie theater — the vacant lot stands out like a knife wound on a woman’s placid face, shocking, brazen, ugly.
It is always empty. Except for one thing: a ragged heap of old trash, all nasty black tar paper and vicious snarls of rusted wire, car parts and broken glass and other junkyard jetsam. The embodiment of injury waiting to happen, an invitation to a tetanus shot... the city never hauled it away. No one ever wants anywhere near it; it radiates an eerie sense of calculating watchfulness.
And at night, it wanders.
When darkness falls, and the last cars heading into the hives of tract housing stop illuminating the asphalt with moving-picture shadows, it… unfolds. Bitter, broken tangles, grotesquely mov
